“gemba walk” (lean thinking term) to go to the actual place where value is added + “walkabout” (Australian aborigine) a short period of wandering bush life engaged as an occasional interruption of regular work

Here’s a simple example of kanban in our kitchen. We have a basket above the cabinets that holds the coffee & coffee stuff. When the coffee beans in the storage can run out, we go to the basket, get some more coffee beans, fill up the can and have our coffee. Sometimes though, we pull down the coffee basket and discover there are no beans. CRAP!
So the kanban works like this. The extra bag of coffee beans sits outside of the basket and is a signal that we have extra coffee beans. When it is empty, we place the empty bag on the grocery list as a reminder to buy more coffee beans.
Simple. It works.
