“gemba walk” (lean thinking term) to go to the actual place where value is added + “walkabout” (Australian aborigine) a short period of wandering bush life engaged as an occasional interruption of regular work

I had the good fortune of seeing examples of the application of the 3P process at Park Nicollet Health System in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It has been used in a number of applications including: Chanhassen Clinic (where patients “toom” themselves), design of the cancer center and eating disorders center.
Some considerations for the 3P process:
1 - What is the flow challenge?
2 - What is the preferred flow?
3 - Determine how to make it flow.
4 - Determine how to keep it flowing.
This was a pretty impressive experience and is definitely worth further exploration and learning.
At the end of the Gemba visit, we heard from the COO of Park Nicollet (Mike Kaupa) who showed this diagram (below) which made a lot of sense.

By using the 3P methodology, you can get to your target cost a lot sooner.
