Newsweek Featured the Wrong Doctor

“gemba walk” (lean thinking term) to go to the actual place where value is added + “walkabout” (Australian aborigine) a short period of wandering bush life engaged as an occasional interruption of regular work

The cover of the September 19, 2011 Newsweek features the idea that everyday citizens are stepping forward to fix America because it won’t happen through government.  On page 42 they talk about healthcare reform and almost get it right.

The article features Dr. Don Berwick, currently the administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.  But there are two problems: 1) they got his first name wrong - his name is “Don” not “Dave” and 2) they featured the wrong doctor.

Although Dr. Berwick has been instrumental in fundamental healthcare reform, he is (unfortunately) surrounded by the bureaucratic forces that make change impossible.  The better choice for the article would have been Dr. John Toussaint, CEO of the Thedacare Center For Healthcare Value.

Watch for his new book “The Lifeline: A Collaborative Cure for Healthcare” which will be published this January.
